Grades K–4
Shapes
Kids start by naming shapes, then learn what makes a shape that shape: a triangle has 3 straight sides and 3 corners, however it's turned. Later they split shapes into equal parts and find lines of symmetry, where one half is a mirror of the other.
What kids learn, grade by grade
- KName flat and solid shapes, whatever their size or how they're turned.
- 1Describe shapes by their sides and corners, and put shapes together to make new ones.
- 2Split shapes into halves, thirds and quarters.
- 4Find lines of symmetry and right angles.
Try this at home
- Go on a shape hunt: how many rectangles in the kitchen?
- Turn a triangle upside down and ask “is it still a triangle?” (Yes.)
- Fold paper shapes to find lines of symmetry.
